Examples of WIM Data Reports

WIMnet is a data management platform that makes processing, quality assurance, storage and reporting of traffic and WIM data much easier.  With WIMnet a road agency can integrate its traffic data collection devices into one solution, reducing the effort in data handling, and vastly increasing the information available to its customers.  WIMnet runs as a web application service on the road agency’s intranet and is accessed via a web browser.

WIMnet has been available in Australia for years.  As it is a device-independent software, jurisdictions have been swapping their device-dependent software with this enterprise-class system.

It was agreed by Australian jurisdictions that in WIMnet or equivalent WIM data processing and reporting application, all the Austroads classes should be reported without excluding any vehicle with a set of Minimum GVM = 0 tonnes.

For reference, the table below provides the current Austroads vehicle classification system.

Definitions

Group: (axle group) - where adjacent axles are less than 2.1m apart

Groups: number of axle groups

The following two figures are load frequency distribution graphs from the New Zealand Transport Agency’s 2009 annual WIM report. Historic WIM data is being used to forecast future maintenance costs for pavements and bridges and there is likely to be an increased demand for WIM sites over the next five years.

Another commercial package developed to analyse and report WIM data is Hi-COMM 100.  A powerful, multi-function software package developed in-house by TDC Systems, the HI-COMM 100 retrieves vehicle data recorded from the HI-TRAC 100 traffic classification and WIM system.

HI-TRAC 100 connects to two piezo-electric sensors and one inductive loop per traffic lane and calculates axle loading, vehicle speed and vehicle inter-axle separation.  It also monitors the inductive loop signal to determine vehicle presence time over the road sensor array and hence provides an indication of lane occupancy.

The HI-TRAC 100 system may be linked via a modem and telephone line, a GSM modem or a data (RS485) cable link to a PC for downloading of data, administration and real time viewing of traffic.  Additionally a laptop computer can be connected locally via a serial (RS232) port on the front panel of the HI-TRAC 100.  The HI-TRAC 100 continues to record vehicle data whilst HI-COMM is connected to and downloading to the laptop or remote PC.

A range of reports are available from the HI-COMM 100 software package.  These include:

  • volume per class per lane
  • average speed per class per lane
  • volume per lane per time band
  • AEF & ESA per Weight Band per Lane
  • volume per speed band per lane
  • volume per speed band per time band including percentile speed
  • overloaded vehicles per class per lane
  • average speed per category
  • traffic volume by category by lane.
